Abstract

During the Kaiyuan era of Tang dynasty, Yang Jin, a county magistrate, composed the Stele of the Grand Buddha Hall at the Guangye Temple in the Imperial Mausoleum of the Great Tang Dynasty along with nine quatrains in four-character verses. These works meticulously documented the temple’s construction process, its scenic features, and extolled the virtues of local prefectural and county officials. The stele’s text implicitly conveys the moral and cultural intentions behind the temple and its inscriptions—namely, the promotion of the enduring values of "ritual propriety" (li) and "filial piety" (xiao). The nine four-character poems, structured in quatrains, highlight the role of Guangye Temple’s establishment within the social moral and cultural framework by emphasizing both the material embodiments of li and its performative expressions. Ultimately, these works underscore how the maintenance of li contributed to the consolidation of political authority. Over time, Guangye Temple has gradually shed its political and ritualistic connotations as a moral-cultural space, yet its ethical and cultural functions continue to profoundly influence later generations in inheriting filial piety and studying the ritual systems of its era.
