Abstract

Du Yunxie is a renowned returned overseas Chinese poet, and his poetry and prose about Nanyang (Southeast Asia) are often seen as reflecting a tension between “Chineseness” and “ Nanyangness”. In his works, the motif of “Nanyang” is frequently regarded as a vehicle for expressing Chinese identity. However, this paper does not fully agree with it. Therefore, this study focuses on Du Yunxie's poetry collection You Are the First I Loved, published in 1993 after his return to Southeast Asia, as the primary text for analysis. The collection will be examined within the broader context of literary works by returned overseas Chinese writers after the Cultural Revolution. This paper will explore how Du's poetry represents Nanyang, the purpose and significance of invoking “Nanyang” in his work, and how these motives differ from those in his earlier works. The study also aims to uncover the evolving relationship between this literary shift and the concept of "Chinese hiddenness" in culture.
