Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • Please provide (separate Microsoft Word documents):
    1. Full text of manuscript and abstract (plus five keywords) - without the list of author(s)
    2. Title page and abstract-include title, name of the author(s) (first author, corresponding author, co-authors), affiliation (department, faculty/college, university, address and formal email address), and contact number. The abstract must include five keywords.
  • The text is single-spaced, Palatino Linotype; uses a 10.5-point font; employs italics rather than underlining.
  • All illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points rather than at the end of the article. Each of them MUST BE CITED.
  • All submissions should acknowledge the funding / grant number / supporting agencies, after conclusion before the references.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.

Author Guidelines

Contributions in English should be typed single-spaced, and the length is between 6,000 to 8,000 words for the entire paper, 5,000 words for the review article and 1,500 words for a book review. All citations and references must strictly follow the latest version APA style (version 7) without footnotes or endnotes.
Please submit two documents as follows: 
i) Title page ( author's affiliation, email address & abstract with a minimum of five keywords).
ii) Full text WITHOUT the author's name & affiliation, but must provide the title, abstract and Keywords. 
 

MANUSCRIPT GUIDELINES FOR AUTHORS
Journal's publication process is a professional academic activity and should be encouraged.

JATI'S REVIEW PROCESS
JATI is practising a double-blind peer-review process, in which the author (s) and the reviewer (s) do not know each other. Peer review is fundamental to the scientific publication process.

QUALITY OF THE PAPER
Authors are considered JATI experts in the related topics addressed in the paper they write.   
The editor-in-chief will observe and ensure the quality and performance of the writers to ensure the journal's high quality. In addition, this assessment will assist the JATI Board of Editors in allowing the writers to continue publishing papers in this journal.
Therefore, the most useful and helpful reports will assist the authors in improving the quality of their papers. The reviewed article with arguments by the reviewers is valuable to the authors in enriching and strengthening their papers for publication.  

PUBLICATION ETHICS AND CONFIDENTIALITY
The authors are responsible for ensuring that they have written entirely original works. If the authors have used the work and words of others, this has been appropriately cited or quoted. The similarity index (Turnitin check) should be less than 15 per cent.  The Journal editors and reviewers will detect plagiarism in the papers submitted to JATI.  The reviewers may notify or report to the Editor-in-Chief if they suspect the author's misconduct or plagiarism by the author(s) without publicly announcing it. Reviewers must keep all information about the submitted paper(s) confidential to keep the author(s) and the paper safely publish their research output.

GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR AUTHORS

  1. Authors should be aware of the aims and scope of the journal to evaluate whether the paper is fit for this journal; the aims and scope of the journal are as follows:
    The aim is to bridge and connect the gap between scholarships in the multi-discipline studies Southeast Asian region and global scholarships on any theme and issues related to the social sciences and humanities.
    And the scope of JATI broadly focuses on the research result on Social Sciences and Humanities related to the area of Southeast Asia which seeks to promote critical analysis upon inter-related issues within this geographical area economy, politic, social, art and cultural issues.

JATI requested that papers be indicated as theoretical/Conceptual.  The author should review previous research or theories. The theory, if any, should be relevant and discussed throughout the paper. 

  1. The paper should explain clearly the methodology, whether a systematic and coherent method should be followed in qualitative or quantitative empirical studies. Therefore, the reviewers must review the paper following the convention of a research paper, which includes a clear abstract (with keywords), introduction, background, research questions and objectives, literature review and theoretical framework, methodology, analysis, findings, conclusion and recommendations.  
  1. The reviewers should be able to justify the paper's contribution in several aspects, such as its contribution to advancing knowledge in the discipline, the implications of the findings, and its attraction to other people, researchers, or policymakers for further research and application.  
  1. The article should show its capability in communication, which is adequate in terms of language efficiency, clarity and coherence. The paper should be easy to understand and follow logical format, good data presentation, points, tables, figures, graphs, etc. 

TEMPLATE OF THE PAPER FOR AUTHORS

  1. SUITABILITY OF THE TITLE, ABSTRACT AND KEYWORDS
    The title should represent the Southeast Asian region or country studies. A case study is not a priority.
    Abstract- Should consist of 4 important elements:
    - The research focus (i.e. statement of the problem(s)/research issue(s) addressed);
    - The research methods (experimental research, case studies, questionnaires, etc.);
    - The results/findings of the research; and
    - The main conclusions and recommendations
    Keywords: the right keywords for the entire discourse of the paper
  1. INTRODUCTION 
    An introduction is the initial part of a research paper, which a reader is likely to read first (at least when focusing intensely and reading your paper in detail). ... The introduction of writing is going to set out your rationale, which is what research will be based on
    The study's background will provide context to the information discussed throughout the research paper. Background information may include both critical and relevant studies. This is particularly important if a study either supports or refutes the thesis.
    The background of the study will discuss the problem statement, rationale, and research questions. It links an introduction to the research topic and ensures a logical flow of ideas.  Thus, it helps readers understand the reasons for conducting the study.
  2. LITERATURE REVIEW, THEORETICAL AND CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
    Literature sufficiently reviewed?
    Literature review surveys books, scholarly articles, and any other sources relevant to a particular issue, area of research, or theory, providing a description, summary, and critical evaluation of these works in relation to the research problem being investigated.
    A summary of previous investigations helps one understand the state of current research and its relevance and provides an overall picture of the literature’s contribution to scholarship.
  3. METHODOLOGY
    The methodology should be sufficiently described, and a suitable methods should be used. 
  4. ANALYSIS
    Data analysis supporting the findings
  5. RESULTS (FINDINGS AND ANALYSIS)Appropriateness of the presentation of findings and their analysis thematically
  6. DISCUSSION
    The discourse of the analysis critically discusses them thematically
  7. CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS
    - Restate the topic. The author should briefly restate the topic and explain why it is important.
    - Restate the thesis. ...
    - Briefly summarise the main points. ...
    - Add the points up. ...
    - Make a call to action when appropriate. ...
    - Answer the “so what” question.

 *Make sure to revisit the objectives, theoretical and conceptual framework, analysis, and findings and connect them in conclusion. 

  1. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS 
    Please include the individuals and organisations that contributed to the research by having the names, research grant title and grant number. 
  2. CITATIONS AND REFERENCES
    JATI-Journal of Southeast Asian Studies follows the APA style in citing various sources for in-text citations and on the reference page. Please use the latest version of the APA Publication Manual. 
    Please do not include footnotes or endnotes in the manuscript.  All citations must be listed in the references list. The uncited references should be omitted. 
  3. TECHNICAL
    Please indicate all figures, maps, charts, tables, diagrams, etc accordingly. Please number all of them, which must be reflected in the text or discussion. Please indicate the source(s) at the bottom of the maps, charts, tables, diagrams, etc.
    Font type: Palatino-Linotype and font size 10.5.
    Paper size: 6.75 inches (width), 9.65 inches (height)
    Length of the paper: minimum: 6,000 words, maximum: 8,000 words (exclude references).
  4. LANGUAGE
    The language style used for publication in this JATI is British English. Grammar, diction, and sentence structure do or do not impede the reading.
    The paper should be academically sound and readable. All accepted articles must be edited by a qualified professional editor before the final submission. All accepted papers will be edited by the professional editor(s). All authors are responsible for managing the copy-editing of the manuscript with the suggested professional editor(s).

These guidelines are fully consistent with the COPE Principles of Transparency and Best Practice Guidelines and the COPE Code of Conduct (https://publicationethics.org). 

We encourage the best standards of publication ethics and take all possible principles of transparency and measures against publication malpractices. The Department of Southeast Asian Studies as the publisher plays its role of guardianship over all processes of publishing seriously and we perform our ethical and other tasks. 

  • General duties and responsibilities of editors
    Editors should be accountable for everything published in their journals. This means the editors should strive to meet the needs of readers and authors; constantly improve their journal; have processes in place to assure the quality of the material they publish; champion freedom of expression; maintain the integrity of the academic record; preclude business needs from compromising intellectual and ethical standards; and always be willing to publish corrections, clarifications, retractions and apologies when needed. In addition to these general duties, the editors accept the obligation to apply best will and practice to cope with the following responsibilities: 

  • Editorial Board
    Editorial board will be generated from recognized experts in the field. The editor will provide full names and affiliations of the members as well as updated contact information for the editorial office on the journal webpage. 

  • Duties of Reviewers
    Contribution to Editorial Decisions 
    Peer review assists the editor in making editorial decisions and through the editorial communications with the author may also assist the author in improving the paper. 

  • Duties of Authors
    Reporting standards
    Authors should follow the format of reporting the original research with accurate data gathered. The author should include sufficient detail and references to allow others to replicate the work. It is unacceptable if the author performs malpractices in the paper.

  • Originality and Plagiarism
    The authors should ensure that they have produced original papers, and must appropriately cite or quoted if the authors have used the work and words of others.

  • Concurrent Publication 
    It is unethical and unacceptable for an author to submit or publish the same research or manuscripts in more than one journal or primary publication. 

  • Acknowledging the Sources 
    Authors should cite properly publications that have been influential in determining the nature of the reported work. 

  • Paper authorship 
    Those who have made a significant contribution to the paper should be named as an author and co-authors. Those who have participated in the aspects of the research should be listed as contributors. All co-authors should have seen and approved the final version of the paper and have agreed to its submission for publication. 

  • Announcement and Conflicts of Interest 
    All authors should include the financier or grant giver if the manuscript or research is financed by the research grant or any financial support body. 

  • Errors in published works 
    The author is responsible for communicating and co-operating with the editor to retract or correct the paper when a significant error or inaccuracy in his/her published work. 

  • Publication decisions 
    The editor should be responsible for deciding which of the articles submitted to the journal should be published. The validation of the work in question and its importance to researchers and readers must always drive such decisions. The editor may be guided by the policies of the journal's editorial board and constrained by such legal requirements, copyright infringement, and plagiarism. The editor may confer with other editors or reviewers in making this decision. 

  • Peer review process 
    All journal's content (articles) are subjected to a double-blind, peer-review process. Articles are first reviewed by editors and may be rejected because it is not dealing with the subject matter. Articles that are found suitable for review are then sent to two experts who are unknown to each other in the field of the paper. 

    Reviewers are asked to classify the paper as publishable, publishable with amendments and improvements, or rejected. Reviewer's evaluations normally include the recommendation of what to do with the paper. The reviewer's comments are then seen by the author. 

    Editors should be ready to justify any important points from the described process. Editors should not reverse decisions on publication. Editors should publish guidance to both authors and reviewers on everything that is expected of them. This guidance should be regularly updated and will refer to or link this code. 

  • Fair play
    The editor should evaluate manuscripts for their intellectual content without regard to race, gender, sexual orientation, religious belief, ethnic origin, citizenship, or political philosophy of the authors. Editors' decision to accept or reject a paper for publication should be based only on the paper's importance, originality and clarity, and the study's relevance to the aim of the journal.

  • Digital Archiving
    The editor will ensure digital preservation of access to the journal content by the University of Malaya Journal depository section at http://jati-dseas.um.edu.my and MyJournal at http://www.myjurnal.my/public/browse-journal-view.php?id=39

  • Confidentiality
    Editor and any editorial staff must keep confidential all information about a submitted and review process of the manuscript to anyone except the corresponding author, reviewers, potential reviewers, other editorial advisers, and the publisher.

  • Publication and Submission fee
    Authors are free to submit without charges. Authors are required to pay the Article Processing Charges RM300 / USD80. 

  • Open Access Policy
    The journal is freely available online. Authors must agree with this open access policy which enables unrestricted access and reuse of all published articles. The articles are published under the Creative Commons copyright license policy CC-BY.

  • Reporting standards
    Authors of papers should present an accurate account of the work performed as well as an objective discussion of its significance. Underlying data should be represented accurately in the paper. A paper should contain sufficient detail and references to permit others to replicate the work. Fraudulent or knowingly inaccurate statements constitute unethical behaviour and are unacceptable. Review and professional publication articles should also be accurate and objective, and editorial 'opinion' works should be clearly identified as such.

  • Originality and Plagiarism
    The authors should ensure that they have written entirely original works and if the authors have used the work and words of others that this has been appropriately cited or quoted.

The names and email addresses entered in this journal site will be used exclusively for the stated purposes of this journal and will not be made available for any other purpose or to any other party.
